The Lagenaria vulgaris (fam.Cucurbitaceae) produces a type of pumpkin which, drying up, becomes woody and is well suited to be engraved or painted. Used in the traditional handicrafts of several countries, in Peru represents the base of the ancient and refined art of the mate burilado, whose first known examples date back to 3500 years ago. Taking advantage of the various forms of the pumpkin, the craftsman engraves on the outer surface, with buril, images of animals or life scenes that take on the dynamic of short stories.
BURIL: manual tool used to engrave different materials with the simple pressure or with the aid of a little hammer
(as in the ancient writing systems).
